Your showroom displays may tell a story about your brand, but is it the right one? Worn samples, faded graphics, and outdated product assortments can signal neglect rather than quality, weakening customer confidence before the sales conversation even begins. A seasonal program checkup can reveal where displays support sales and where they may be quietly holding them back.

According to Konrad Giersz, president of Pak-It Displays, the transition between selling seasons is an especially valuable time to evaluate building materials display programs. Manufacturers have enough real-world feedback to see what works and what doesn’t, while still having time to make meaningful improvements before the next sales cycle begins.

How to Recognize When a Building Materials Display Program Stops Working

One of the strongest warning signs is a drop in sample board reorders. According to Giersz, declining activity often signals that your display is no longer aligned with the products dealers are selling or customers want to see.

Perhaps new colors and products never made it onto the display, while discontinued options continue taking up valuable space. The branding and literature may feel dated, or the display’s condition may no longer reflect the product quality it is meant to showcase.

Other warning signs are easier to miss. Sales representatives may gradually stop requesting a display because it no longer supports their conversations. Dealers may begin altering displays on their own, while missing samples go unreplaced. Individually, these changes may seem minor. Together, they can reveal a program that is losing relevance.

“A successful display should make the sales conversation easier,” Giersz says. “When the salesperson has to work around the display rather than with it, something is wrong.”

Why Display Condition Matters

In the building-materials industry, a physical sample board or display may be the closest your customers get to experiencing the finished product before making a purchase. What they see and touch can influence not only how they perceive your product, but whether they ultimately choose to buy it.

A faded roofing sample, damaged flooring board, or outdated color selection sends a message, even if it is not the one you intend. Instead of showcasing quality, a neglected display can make your brand appear outdated or inattentive to detail.

The sales impact can be just as significant. If your display does not include current colors, features, and products, customers may never discover those options. As Giersz explains, “Customers can’t buy what they can’t see.”

Evaluate Your Sample Program From Four Critical Angles

To understand whether your sample and display program is truly performing, Giersz recommends examining it through four essential lenses: accuracy, condition, effectiveness, and utilization.

1. Accuracy

Do your displays reflect the products, colors, specifications, branding, and marketing messages customers should be seeing today? Even small inconsistencies can confuse your dealers and sales representatives while undermining customer confidence.

 2. Condition

Are samples damaged, faded, incomplete, or otherwise no longer representative of the product you want customers to experience?

3. Effectiveness

Do your displays help customers understand their options and move confidently toward a decision? Strong merchandising should educate your buyers, highlight meaningful product differences, and make a potentially complicated selection process feel simpler.

4. Utilization

Are your dealers, distributors, and sales representatives actually using the program, or are the materials merely taking up space? Their feedback can show you whether a display supports sales conversations or has lost its value.

“When you combine those four perspectives, you get a much clearer picture of the true health of the program,” Giersz says.

Equip the Sales Teams for the Season Ahead

The best sales tools do more than showcase products: they remove friction, strengthen your story, and help customers buy with confidence. Before the next selling season, ensure your dealers and distributors have current samples, accurate information, refreshed displays and collateral, and everything else they need, delivered to the right people at the right time.

“That is an important part of how we approach these programs at Sampco,” says Giersz. “We think about the entire lifecycle—from creative development and engineering through print, production, kitting, inventory management, and fulfillment. A great marketing tool sitting in a warehouse doesn’t help anyone sell.”

Prioritize the Updates That Matter Most

Replacing every display at once is rarely necessary. Instead, Giersz recommends targeting updates where they can deliver the greatest business impact.

Start with high-performing locations, priority products, and influential sales channels. Damaged or outdated displays, especially those promoting discontinued products, should also move to the top of the list.

Program data can sharpen these decisions. Tracking display locations, production dates, and versions in the field reveals the most urgent needs and helps direct resources where they are most likely to strengthen sales.

“A more targeted approach can reduce waste while putting investment where it will have the greatest impact,” Giersz says.

Creating a Consistent Brand Experience

Even the strongest sample programs can lose consistency and impact without ongoing management. For large building-material manufacturers, regular oversight is essential to keeping displays, sample boards, and collateral aligned with the brand’s positioning, visual language, and product story.

“The most effective programs create a cohesive experience from the brand to the showroom to the sample in the customer’s hand,” Giersz says. “That is where we see the greatest opportunity for manufacturers—and where Pak-It Displays brings together strategy, design, print, sampling, displays and fulfillment into one coordinated program.”
